I recently purchased a 1964 Cavalier CSS-8-64 Machine. It has the CAV-873 Refrigeration unit in it. The previous owner said it was working but needed a 3 in 1 Hard start kit. I transported the machine laying on it's back. Let it sit for 24 hours upright before I did anything else. I installed the RC0410 kit, Blew out the fins of the evaporator and condenser with compressed air to make sure they would get good air flow then plugged it in. It fired right up and was whisper quiet. Both fans working correctly. After about 30 minutes I opened it up and it was NOT cool inside. I unplugged it and let it sit overnight again. The next morning about 12 hours later I plugged it in again and after about 30 minutes it was ICY COLD inside! However the compressor unit was humming / vibrating pretty loud so I unplugged it for about 2 hours. I plugged it in again and after 30 minutes it was still whisper quiet, I thought I was out of the woods. It was operating correctly, both fans spinning but the inside was not cool! I unplugged it again and now I am in a holding pattern, I do not want to damage the machine. One note is was 90 degrees today after I plugged it in the second time. Is it possible I overheated it? Is there a thermal safety on it somewhere?
tdipartz,
A 3 in 1 booster is used to extend the working life of a compressor when it is wearing out. Sometimes it will work for 6 months and sometimes for 1 hour. So it sounds like you need the compressor rebuilt. Sorry :(

You hit the nail on the head. The compressor was toast. I just paid the local Vending Gurus $400.00 to have the refrigeration unit completely gone through. Now it runs whisper quiet and gets cold FAST. However we have a new problem. When I picked up the unit I was told to leave the thermostat on 4 and it will keep the bottles at exactly 36drg. I went to Cash & Carry and got a high quality thermometer and set it in the middle of the unit (4th rack up). After running the unit for 30 minutes the inside was 30 degrees! I left the door open so the inside would climb up then I set the thermostat on the lowest setting possible and closed the door. I checked it again in 20 minutes and it was 28 degrees! I would assume after paying $400.00 that the system was thoroughly tested before I was called to pick it up. BTW the local shop that did it is the best in town, been doing just vending machines for 25 years. It is after hours so I am hoping to get an answer before I call them tomorrow. Is there a way to clean and adjust the thermostat?
I got the compressor replaced and then had to replace the thermostat. Do you know why the old temp probe is coated with grease? See Pic...
